Plants vs. Zombies Cake & Cupcakes

Plants vs. Zombies Cake & Cupcakes

This is an 8″ butter pound cake covered with fondant icing. I cut out small squares and made a checkerboard on top. If you’re familiar with the game Plants vs. Zombies, you will see that the plants and the zombies battle on top of a checkerboard, too.

Then I cut up different lengths of wooden planks and placed them on the side of the cake. I also got the inspiration from the game itself. And since the celebrant’s request is to have a lot of flowers around her cake, I made different colors of the flowers from the game, too.

For the cupcakes, I made different kinds of plant characters using gum paste. I think I was smiling the whole time I was making this project. Playing Plants vs. Zombies in the computer is one of the things my kids and I enjoy doing together, and they’re very good at it. And in a sense, they know the details of each of the characters. The  kids were very much involved in the quality control of my gum paste creations. Like for example, if you notice in the picture above I missed the sensor on top of the the potato bomb’s head. They pointed that out after I was done taking the pictures. I had to add them in the end.

Angry Birds and Plant vs. Zombies Cupcakes

19 May
I got an order for a dozen Banana Chocolate Chip cupcakes with half Angry Birds toppers and half Plants vs. Zombies toppers. I tried my new vanilla bean paste for the buttercream icing and it really does taste different! Yummy!!!

Andres helped me make the green buttercream icing for the grass, using my new vanilla bean paste. The authentic one really does taste better than imitation vanilla extracts. The taste is really different. I remember hearing once a saying that goes, “You’ll never really know the real thing until you’ve tried it.” The buttercream icing that I used to make with the vanilla powder tasted good to me already. I actually thought it was perfect. But after tasting the buttercream icing with the vanilla bean paste, I realized the difference. And from now on, I won’t be settling for anything less. A fake can never replace the real thing. Hmmm… I should write more on this. The point is don’t settle for anything less than the real thing!
He wanted me to take his picture with the gum paste toppers.
Anyway, I also tested the new Bondi pack of the Hipstamatic Camera app in my iPhone and the pictures turned out great! Looks very professional…

Happy Birthday, Manolo!!!
