Angry Birds Cake & Cupcakes

One of the things I enjoy doing with my kids is playing the game Angry Birds on the iPhone. Of course, they’re way better than me. My boys are sooo good at these things. Every time I get stuck in a level, I just call one of them to get me out – many times in just one try. So if you’re wondering why I haven’t updated my blog in a while, blame Angry Birds.

All this playing did prove useful when I got an order for an Angry Birds cake with cupcakes to match.

I immediately thought about them. I always think of fun and interesting activities I can do with them, and having them help me decorate the cake (maybe make the pigs or something simple like the bricks and wood blocks) would be both fun and productive. I realized it was harder than I expected to make those pigs, so I just made them small cakes to decorate on their own with the gum paste characters they made.

It was really fun making these Angry Birds characters. My boys would give suggestions on the littlest details, like how the red bird’s eyebrows were supposed to be crossed, or that the pigs weren’t green enough. It just showed that they play this game too much.

I really appreciate that my boys notice the details of things, something that they got from me perhaps? Working on the details of these tiny characters is a lot of fun for me. I tinker with gum paste shapes of different colors and sizes to come up with a combination that’s just right. I believe that even the smallest detail makes a great difference, and deserves a lot of work. I want my cakes to make moments special, and I believe that will happen as I continue to give each piece special attention.
